You Know It’s A Revolution When

You know it’s a revolution when people are meditating, debating housing rights, doing training in nonviolent communications, and practicing acupuncture in the same physical location. You know it’s a revolution when you can go hours or even days without spending a single dollar and not feel a hint of consumerist desire. You know it’s a revolution when families, homeless people, doctoral students, elderly and young people, black and white and brown and every other color people are sitting together and talking, eating, working. You know it’s a revolution when everyone gets the same amount of the same meal, waits in line for the same amount of time, and shows the same amount of appreciation for their food. You know it’s a revolution when, at 11 o’clock at night, people are marching silently alongside police officers on motorcycles and there’s no reason to be marching other than it feels liberating. You know it’s a revolution when you want to be there physically almost every minute and when you are there, spiritually, virtually all the time. You know it’s a revolution when the people who are supposedly the bad guys show up to tell you that you’re doing the right thing and to keep on going. You know it’s a revolution when the thought, “this is beautiful,” floats repeatedly through your head. You know it’s a revolution when you start doing your work with more vigor. You know it’s a revolution when people are smiling and laughing, yelling and getting angry, pouring out frustrations and insisting on their right to feel, to be emotional and to let it show. You know it’s a revolution when people stop saying “I” and only say “we.” You know it’s a revolution when the next thing that happens could be anything, coming from anyone, anywhere, but whatever it is, it’s going to be exactly what’s meant to happen, because it’s a breaking-open, a breaking-away from the place where we were immobilized, buried under broken dreams, it’s a moving-forward, it’s a moving-together, and so whatever forward looks like and whoever becomes that together, it’s going to be fine. If it’s going to look anything like this revolution looks like, it’s going to be fine.
